Dubai Customs Launches New Blockchain Platform to Enhance Supply Chain Efficiency
Dubai Customs has unveiled a new blockchain platform designed to reduce supply chain friction both within Dubai and across its borders. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to reinforce Dubai’s status as a leading "smart" city. The platform aims to simplify customs clearance and commercial transactions by minimizing paperwork and facilitating tamper-proof data sharing, ultimately saving time and effort for local supply chains.
Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, emphasized that this innovation aligns with Dubai's vision of becoming a global hub for trade and logistics. By leveraging blockchain technology, the platform aims to expedite various procedures, enhancing transparency and efficiency within the supply chain. Dr. Abdullah Busnad, Director General of Dubai Customs, echoed this sentiment, noting that the goal is to create a smoother, more streamlined, and transparent business environment in Dubai.
Blockchains have been recognized for their potential to track real-time movement in supply chains and combat fraud and counterfeiting. Despite some challenges to mass adoption, such as the discontinuation of IBM and Maersk’s TradesLens platform due to insufficient global industry collaboration, other platforms continue to thrive. VeChain, launched in 2016, and Chainlink, introduced in 2019, are notable players in supply-chain automation. Additionally, the Hong Kong-based Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) has gained prominence in the blockchain supply chain space. Dubai Customs also launched a blockchain-based platform for cross-border e-commerce in January 2020, further demonstrating the city's commitment to leveraging blockchain technology for enhanced trade and logistics.
