ekarThe Middle East's first and largest car-sharing platform
App-based car-sharing service offering pay-per-minute, hourly and daily rentals across UAE and Saudi Arabia. Pioneered carsharing in the Middle East and remains the region's largest operator.
FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
Being the first car-sharing platform in MENA gave ekar a head start, but in a market where car ownership is deeply cultural and public transit is limited, the real achievement is proving shared mobility can work in the Gulf at all. At $50M, ekar straddles pay-per-minute and daily rental, filling the gap between ride-hailing and traditional car rental.
The strategic tension is fleet economics: cars depreciate, UAE insurance is expensive, and utilization must stay high. The absence of robust public transit is both opportunity and constraint — demand exists, but trips are longer and fleet wear higher. Watch for partnerships with real estate developers and transit authorities as indicators of whether car-sharing becomes embedded in urban planning.
